Dealing with debt harassment
Office of Fair Trading Debt Collection Guidance.pdf (PDF, 119k)
Harassing people in debt is a criminal offence under the Administration of Justice Act 1970.
Most debt collectors conduct business over the telephone. If you feel you are being harassed, make a note of any demands made or inappropriate behaviour to use as proof.
If this behaviour breaches the OFT’s (Office of Fair Trading) debt collection guidance, a letter of complaint should be sent immediately. If the matter is not resolved your complaint against the collector and creditor will be taken to the next level.
In extreme cases of harassment or violence, the police and trading standards should be informed. No further contact should be made with the debt collector until the matter is resolved.
